Royal Photographic Society Distinctions - ARPS
Both members and non-members may apply for the Associateship, which is a more
specialised distinction than the Licentiateship. It is awarded for a high degree
of proficiency, and the demonstration of appropriate technical and visual
competence in particular categories. Applicants who are not members of the RPS
should submit an application for membership with their evidence. This will be
processed if an associateship is awarded.
The entry categories are:
● applied and professional;
● audio visual sequences;
● contemporary;
● documentary and visual journalism;
● film and video;
● nature;
● printing;
● research, education and the application of photography;
● science;
● travel; and
● visual art
The evidence required is:
● for still photography, 15 prints, 15 slides or 15 images on CD-ROM;
● for audio visual, one or more sequences of not less than 15 minutes total duration.
● for film and video, 15 minutes of film or video; or
● for research, education and application of photography, a dissertation of approximately 5000 words.
Exemptions are:
● a combined BA Hons degree in photography (at least two-thirds photography);
● a BA degree in photography;
● a BTEC HND in photography;
● a foundation degree in photography;
● a BIPP associateship; or
● an MPA associateship.
