Camera control software allows a camera to be controlled from a remote computer keyboard using a USB cable or through a wired or wireless LAN using a wireless transmitter. All the principal settings such as exposure mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO setting and shutter release are easily configured.

Nikon sells its own camera control software dedicated to the company's range of DSLRs. The non-commercial IRIS package, available free of charge at www.astrosurf.com, provides for image alignment and stacking, calibration, correction and enhancement as well as DSLR focusing and camera control. This is a good mult-purpose astrophotography package although it only supports DSLR cameras. Other packages such as Images Plus Camera Control are also available.
