A standard single mount is ideally cut from ph-neutral mount board, and usually overlaps the front of the image to provide visual space and a broad border. The thickness of the board also prevents the image from touching glass when incorporated into a frame. A thicker but cheaper backing board cut to the outer dimensions of the mat provides protection against damage, particularly where the mat is not framed.
